Maroon beats Gold in Spring Football Game
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Midwestern State University defense stepped up in the second half, stopping the MSU offense to win the annual spring Maroon-Gold game 52-35 on Saturday at the MSU North Field.
The defense, the Maroon team, held the offense, the Gold squad, to 296 yards of total offense in the contest that used a special point system to account for the score.
The Gold led the game early, thanks to a touchdown drive in the first quarter, capped by a nine-yard touchdown run by Adrion Butler. It was the only touchdown of the day.
By continually moving the ball, the Gold held a 26-21 lead at the half.
The Maroon started scoring by stopping the Gold without first downs and took the lead late in the third quarter.
The game opened up in the fourth when the Gold pulled back to within one at 36-35.
Facing a fourth-and-one at the Maroon 32, defender Emmanuel Bagley sacked quarterback Daniel Polk to end the drive and total four points on the play for a 40-35 advantage.
The Maroon then recovered Gold fumbles, worth three points each, on consecutive plays and never looked back.
The Gold was paced by quarterback Rahsaan Bell who went 13-of-17 for 105 yards, while Polk was 11-of-18 for 89 yards. á There were no interceptions in the contest, as the Gold squad threw for 248 yards on 32-of-52 passing.
The rushing attack collected 48 net yards, led by Bryson Porter with 30 stripes on five carries and Robert Agu's 25 yards on seven attempts.
The MSU football team will have a few practices next week to end the spring drills.
