Shaw hits first career homer as MSU Softball sweeps Cameron
LAWTON, Okla. - Kelli Shaw found the most opportunistic time to deliver the first home run of her career Tuesday afternoon at Cameron Field.
And it wasn't a solo shot either.
Shaw's sixth inning grand slam over the right-field fence punctuated a six-run inning and ignited the Mustangs to a sweep over Cameron University 10-5 and 4-2.
No. 14 MSU improved to 24-5 on the season and 7-1 in the Lone Star Conference North Division, while Cameron fell to 14-19 and 2-6.
Amanda Hill got the Mustangs started in the sixth inning with a lead off home run to left field and duplicated the feat to start the seventh.
Brittany Willson improved to 15-2 on the season despite allowing five earned runs and nine hits. The senior starter struck out eight and walked two.
Kristen Stonecipher provided the difference maker in Game 2 when she lined a two-run home run to left field to make a winner of Ashley Kuchenski, who improved to 9-3 on the season.
Kuchenski went the distance, allowing eight hits and two earned runs while striking out three and walking none.
Stonecipher and Shaw led a parade of Mustangs with multiple-hit games with three hits each in the opener. Allison Tidwell, Stephanie Wardlaw, Jessica Rodriguez, Racheal Jackson, Amanda Hill and Chantelle Lee all had two hits. MSU finished with a program-best 18 hits.
Wardlaw, Stonecipher and Lee paced MSU with two hits apiece in Game 2.
The Mustangs return to the diamond next Tuesday when they play host to No. 3 Southeastern Oklahoma State. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
