Jackson's grand slam in ninth lifts MSU Softball past SOSU, 6-2

AMARILLO, Texas - Racheal Jackson delivered a ninth-inning grand slam to lift the Midwestern State University Mustangs past Southeastern Oklahoma State in the final game of the Holiday Inn/Lady Buff Classic Sunday at the Rick Klein Sports Complex.

The Mustangs improved to 17-4 after having a program-best 11-game winning streak snapped 4-3 by St. Edward's earlier in the day.

Sophomore starter Ashley Kuchenski battled Southeastern Oklahoma ace Christina Cearley to a 2-2 deadlock through eight innings with MSU scratching out runs in the first and eighth innings and SOSU scoring in the third and eighth.

Jackson's grand slam was her second of the weekend and fifth home run of the season.

The Savages (19-3) loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth before Brittany Willson came on to earn her second save of the season.

Kuchenski, who improved 5-2 on the season, earned her third win of the weekend by allowing eight hits in 8 2/3 innings of work while striking out five.

Stephanie Wardlaw, Kristen Stonecipher, Jessica Rodriguez joined Jackson with two each for the Mustangs.

MSU was one out away from extending its winning to 12 games earlier in the afternoon against St. Edwards, but Melissa McSheffery's tailing fly ball down the left-field line was muffed by Allison Tidwell to leadoff the top of the seventh.

McSheffery advanced to second on the miscue, but Mustang starter Brittany Willson got Rebecca Ray to fly out center field before striking out Meagan Peiser for the second out of the inning.

Kristen Lozano followed with a double to left field to score McSheffery and Lauren Myrick followed with a two-run home run to left field to give St. Edward's a 4-3 win.

Willson was tagged with her second loss of the season while falling to 11-2. She allowed five hits, while striking out five and walking two.

Kuchenski delivered a solo home run in the third, while Allison Tidwell, Amanda Hill and Stonecipher paced the offense with two hits each.

The Mustangs begin LSC North Division play when they play host to East Central for a doubleheader on Tuesday. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. at the Sunrise Optimist Complex.
