MSU women come up short, fall to Angelo State, 74-69

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Angelo State University Rambelles knocked down four clutch free throws in the game's final minute to come away with a á74-69 win over the Midwestern State University Mustangs Wednesday night at Junell Center/Stephens Arena.

The Rambelles got 20 points from junior guard Ashley King and took control of a game that saw nine ties and four lead changes in the second half alone.

The Mustangs got back-to-back 3-pointers from Brittni Burks and Stacey Staten to take their largest lead of the night at 55-51 with 9:31 remaining.

But MSU was unable to sustain offensive momentum as Angelo State limited the Mustangs to 29.4 percent (10-of-34) in the second half.

Senior center Katherine Maples notched her ninth double-double of the season by scoring 21 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

Burks came off of the bench to nail three 3-pointers on her way to 14 points. The sophomore forward also corralled six rebounds.

Senior guard Tia Banks played 40 minutes and scored 10 points, dished out three assists and swiped two steals.

Britinee Davis and Kandra Lakey joined King as double-figure scorers for the Rambelles with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Mustangs fell to 8-12 on the season and 2-5 in the Lone Star Conference South Division, while Angelo State improved to 15-5 and 6-1.

Midwestern State returns to Stockton Court in Ligon Coliseum Saturday night to play host to Abilene Christian University. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men. The men's game will begin approximately two hours later.
