MSU softball completes Saturday sweep, now 4-1
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Brittany Willson struck out 12 batters on her way to a four-hit shutout as the Midwestern State University Mustangs beat St. Mary's Rattlers 1-0 Saturday night at the SAISD Triplex.
Willson, who is now 4-0 on the season, relieved Jenna Deweber to claim an 8-5 decision over Southern Arkansas earlier in the day.
MSU took four out of five games in the classic and will play at Texas A&M Kingsville on Monday.
Sarah Huddleston blasted an opposite home run in the second inning against St. Mary's to make a winner of Willson.
The Mustangs strung a pair of two-spots together in the fifth and sixth innings earlier in the day to erase a 5-4 Southern Arkansas lead going into the bottom of the fifth.
Racheal Jackson and Kelli Shaw walked after Jessica Rodriguez led off the fifth inning with a double to right field. Huddleson followed with a two-run single to give MSU a 6-5 lead.
Kristen Stonecipher put the game away with a two-run blast in the sixth.
Willson finished the weekend with a 4-0 record, while striking out 33 batters in 25 1/3 innings.
Stonecipher paced the Mustang attack, hitting .444 (8-for-18) including a homer and four RBIs. Chantelle Lee and Huddleson slammed homers for MSU.
