Football adds two assistants

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State University head football coach Bill Maskill announced the hiring of Rich Renner and Steve DeMasi as assistant football coaches for the Mustangs.

Renner was named the MSU defensive line coach, while DeMasi was tabbed the new MSU offensive line coach.

Renner comes to Midwestern after six years at West Texas A&M University, where he coached linebackers and defensive line and served as the WT recruiting coordinator.

DeMasi comes to MSU from Virginia Tech where he served as a graduate assistant coach working with the offensive line for three seasons.

"I'm pleased to welcome Rich and Steve to the MSU program," said Maskill. á "Rich has a wealth of experience from his seasons with West Texas and Steve has coaching and playing experience from an outstanding Division I program. á We got two outstanding coaches."

Renner also had one season at Austin Peay as a defensive line coach and two other seasons as an assistant at Louisville.

Renner was a linebacker at Louisville in 1995 and 1996, working his way from a walk-on to a two-year letterman with the Cardinals.

He earned a bachelors degree in mathematics from UL in 1997 and added a master's of education in 1999 from Louisville.

DeMasi served as the junior varsity head coach and offensive coordinator at Virginia Tech in addition to his assistant offensive line duties.

DeMasi was a three-year starter at center for VT, helping the Hokies to the 1999 Big East championship and a national runner-up position. á He was named the team's Outstanding Offensive Lineman as a senior in 2001.

He earned his bachelor's degree in finance from Virginia Tech in December of 2001 and added a master's in health promotions in December 2003.

DeMasi replaces Geep Wade who left in January as an assistant coach at Division I-AA Tennessee-Martin, while Renner replaces Bryan Cross who became the defensive coordinator at Campbellsville (Ky.).
