MSU takes 3-2 win against Texas Woman's
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Midwestern State University volleyball team remained in the hunt for a berth in the Lone Star Conference Tournament with a spectacular come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Texas Woman's University Tuesday night at Gerald Stockton Court/D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
MSU advanced its record to 25-10 overall, 6-5 in LSC North action, with a 30-26, 27-30, 25-30, 30-22, 15-12 decision against TWU (15-17, 7-4).
Midwestern State hit .255 for the match, while TWU hit .221. In all, five Lady Indians collected 14 or more kills in the contest.
Sophomore Krissa Johnson of Denver City posted her season high of 17 kills and hit .325 to lead the way, while senior Kate Pence of Round Rock, junior Candice Main of Fort Worth/Castleberry and freshman Shay Velasquez of Amarillo/River Road each tallied 15 kills. Sophomore Rachel Gilmore of Arlington/Lamar added 14 kills.
Freshman setter Allison Schreiber of Windthorst set a new MSU season record for assists during the match. Schreiber collected 68 assists in the match, missing the school record for single match assists by only two. For the season, Schreiber has collected 1,461 which surpassed the old season record of 1,403 held by Shayna Buxton from 1998.
TWU was led by Windthorst freshman Kandis Schroeder who chalked up 24 assists and a .429 hitting percentage.
The match was even from the start, with MSU taking the first game, but allowed TWU to take the next two games for a 2-1 lead.
But in game four, MSU jumped out to a 15-10 lead, only to see TWU cut it to a 20-18 advantage on a Sharon Schaffner ace. MSU got that point back and proceeded to collect seven of the next eight points to lead 27-19 and exchanged points to pull out the game win.
The fifth game was a thriller, with the teams exchanging points on nearly every serve. The contest was tied nine times until Gilmore's kill to make it 12-11 gave MSU a lead it wouldn't relinquish.
An attack error by TWU's Carley Messmer put MSU up by two.
Pioneer Kandis Schroeder's kill pulled TWU within one at 13-12. The next volley Schreiber dumped on over the net to regain the two-point advantage, then Pence - playing in her last match at Ligon Coliseum - ended it with a powerful spike from a Schreiber set.
Midwestern State closes LSC North play at 7 p.m. Thursday at Southwestern Oklahoma State. MSU is currently in fourth in the division, but a victory over SWOSU coupled with either a Southeastern Oklahoma loss at Central Oklahoma on Thursday or at Cameron Saturday would put the Lady Indians in the LSC Tournament. A loss by Texas Woman's at SWOSU on Saturday would also put MSU in.
