MSU advances in LSC Tournament with 2-2 tie against Angelo State
EDMOND, Okla. - Midwestern State University and Angelo State University needed seven rounds of penalty kicks after tying at 2-2 before MSU's Melissa Brown scored what proved to be the game winner as the Lady Indians advanced 5-4 on the PKs Friday afternoon at Tom Thompson Field.
MSU (8-8-2), the tournament's number three seed battled hard winds and a tough six seed in Angelo State (7-12-2).
Following Brown's goal, ASU's Amanda Walzel's penalty kick hit the cross bar and was grabbed by MSU keeper Elli O'Dwyer to secure the spot in Friday's semifinal against West Texas A&M.
Midwestern State got on the board first with a goal in the sixth minute when Lauren Sierra got an unassisted goal on a quick shot from 20 yards out that beat ASU keeper Becky Martin high right.
Angelo State answered in the 33rd minute after an MSU foul just outside the 18-yard box. On the free kick following, Casey Halamicek used a wind-blown shot to get past O'Dwyer to tie the game at 1-all.
The physical match was caused tempers to flare between the teams, and referee Paul Scott red carded MSU coach Jeff Trimble less than five minutes into the second half.
MSU allowed a goal in the 61st minute, credited to Tricia Evers after a bad pass was knocked into the goal in a collision with an MSU player.
The Lady Indians came back to tie the contest at the 76 minute mark as Maghan Holmes collected a cross from Brown and buried it behind Martin.
MSU had chances during the second half, with the wind holding up balls and causing one shot to hit the cross bar to be saved.
O'Dwyer collected eight saves against 17 ASU shots, while Martin tallied seven against 19 shots by MSU.
The shootout was tied 1-1 after the first two rounds, when MSU's Michelle Harris made her shot. ASU missed and Brittany Burney scored.
The Rambelles answered with a Halamicek kick and Martin made an strong save of Kelly Tanner's shot.
ASU retied the shootout with a shot over O'Dwyer to send it to a sixth round where both MSU's Megan Bibilone and ASU's Tricia Evers scored.
Midwestern will play without Trimble on the bench against WT, a match that starts at noon on Friday, as a penalty for receiving the red card.
