MSU Men take home finale 2-0
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Midwestern State University men got a pair of first half goals and made them stand as they defeated Missouri Southern State University 2-0 in Southwest Soccer Conference action Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field.
Midwestern (11-3-2, 9-1-2) moved into second place in the SSC with the win in the final regular season home game, coupled with Incarnate Word's 1-0 victory Sunday over West Texas A&M.
Senior Reni Fulkerson scored his first-ever MSU goal in the 24th minute following a deflected corner kick shot. Senior Jimmy Krueger collected the missed attempt and found Fulkerson open on the right side of the box. Fulkerson pounded the shot home to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.
MSU added a second goal just 24 seconds before the half when senior Steven Fryer moved the ball from the defensive end up the touch line in front of the MSU bench. Fryer delivered a nifty pass to freshman Mark McGlinchey who dropped a give-and-go to redshirt freshman Kyle Kmiec. Kmiec's shot pounded MSU keeper Travis Haight. He deflected the shot, but the ball rolled into the goal just inside the left post.
MSU had several chances, but Haight was up to the task, recording 11 saves on 27 Indian shots.
The MSU defense allowed Missouri Southern just seven shots, as MSU sophomore keeper Sean Gill recorded four saves in picking up his third shutout of the season.
Midwestern State now prepares for its final two games of the regular season. Friday, MSU visits St. Mary's in 3 p.m. game rescheduled because of Hurricane Rita in September. The rescheduled game also forced the rescheduling of the season ending game at St. Edwards, now on Sunday, Nov. 6 at 1 p.m.
