MSU battles No. 23 Incarnate Word to 0-0 Tie

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - In a battle of Southwest Soccer Conference heavyweights, 110 minutes of intense action settled nothing as Midwestern State University and No. 23 University of the Incarnate Word ended in a 0-0 tie on Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field.

The tie kept neither MSU (9-3-2, 7-1-2 SSC) nor Incarnate Word (10-4-2, 7-1-2) from taking first place in the league standings, despite West Texas A&M falling to Missouri Southern 3-0 on Sunday.  WT maintains a one-point lead over both squads.

The two teams used the pitch like a chess board, with neither squad able to get one in the back of the net.

MSU freshman goal keeper Raul Herrera of Richardson/Berkner posted the first shutout of his career against the nationally ranked Cardinals with two saves against 14 shots, while UIW freshman Gil Ben Nachem posted his sixth shutout with eight saves against 17 MSU shots.

The save of the game was made by UIW defender Matt Peterson who kept a shot from MSU's Jimmy Krueger from reaching the next in the 83rd minute after Nachem had come off the line.

Midwestern outshot UIW 8-4 in the overtime periods, but to no avail against the stiff defense of the Cardinals.

MSU continues its homestand on Friday night, when the Indians meet Northeastern State in a 7:30 match.
