No. 21 West Texas downs No. 5 MSU 3-0
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The 21st ranked West Texas A&M Buffaloes knocked fifth ranked Midwestern State University out of the unbeaten ranks in men's soccer with a 3-0 Southwest Soccer Conference victory Sunday at the MSU Soccer Field.
Midwestern (5-1-0) was stymied offensively by the strong defensive play of WT (5-0-0). Buff goal keeper Shawn Carr chalked up three save while facing 17 MSU shots.
WT took advantage of MSU defensive mistakes to make the Indians pay for all three goals.
The Buffs got their first goal when Ivan Vargus intercepted a goal kick and fed it to Josh Fender. Fender gave it back to Vargus on a give-and-go just inside the 18-yard box and Vargus got a shot buy MSU keeper Sean Gill who came out on the play. The shot just got inside the far right post and WT grabbed the advantage in the 18th minute.
Just six minutes later, MSU knocked a ball away for a WT corner kick. This time it was Fender who got an open header into the goal off Tom Nutter's corner kick to make it 2-0.
After allowing two goals and recording only one save by the half, Gill was replaced in goal by Raul Herrera at the start of the second half. Herrera also notched two saves in his half.
West Texas A&M closed the scoring with a Nutter blast on a free kick just outside the penalty area in the 68th minute.
Midwestern State returns to action next Friday and Sunday on the road in San Antonio to face St. Mary's Friday afternoon and Incarnate Word Sunday afternoon.
