Lady Indians go to 2-0 in LSC
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Midwestern State University women's soccer team won it's second straight on Wednesday night, defeating Texas Woman's University 2-1 at the MSU Soccer Field.
MSU, now 3-4-1 overall and 2-0 in Lone Star Conference play, battled not only TWU (5-3 overall, 1-1 LSC) but a gusty north wind during the first half that ended scoreless.
TWU outshot MSU 10-4 in the first half, but when MSU got the wind advantage in the second half the Lady Indians outgunned the Pioneers 18-6.
MSU got the first goal on an attack four-and-a half minutes into the second frame. After a shot that Brittany Burney bounced off TWU goal keeper Aly Vincent, Michelle Harris blasted a shot off the crossbar that went right to the foot of Angela Darrough who put it past Vincent.
That 50th minute goal stood until the 82nd minute when MSU's Sam Orer got her first goal of the year from a feed from Tory Broadhurst from 15 yards out. That gave MSU a 2-0 advantage.
It appeared that LSC Defensive Player of the Week Elli O'Dwyer would record her third shutout of the season, but a bad clearing pass was taken by the Pioneers Sue Cribbes who fed Romy Luna mid box to put TWU on the board with 1:44 to play.
TWU threatened to score again as the game ended, but a centering pass missed it's target and slid by the goal mouth.
O'Dwyer recorded five saves on 16 TWU shots, while Vincent tallied 11 saves against 22 MSU attempts.
With the lead in the LSC secured for the time being, MSU hosts a pair of non-conference games this weekend. MSU meets Fort Lewis (Colo.) on Friday at 7 p.m., then will host Mesa State (Colo.) on Sunday at noon.
