ASU edges MSU 30-29
SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Midwestern State University Indians trailed the Angelo State University Rams for only three seconds on Saturday. Unfortunately for MSU, it was the last three seconds of the game as Angelo State scored 23 fourth quarter points to steal a 30-29 victory over the Indians in Lone Star Conference South play.
ASU (5-0, 3-0 all LSC, 1-0 LSC South) got a 20-yard field goal from J.D. Williams with three seconds to play to claim the victory. The game-winning field goal was on the Rams second attempt after the first attempt was blocked by MSU, but the Indians were ruled offside.
The loss wiped out a great game by MSU junior Ross Harrison who had 22 carries for 157 yards, and backup quarterback Ryan Roberts who threw for 127 yards on 5-of-7 passing.
ASU was paced by the passing of Trey Weishuhn who completed 18-of-34 passes for 308 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Freshman Kyle Fox posted 12 carries for 102 yards.
MSU (2-2, 1-2 all LSC, 0-1 LSC South) opened the game with a bang as Gary Elliott intercepted Trey Weishuhn's pass on the first play from scrimmage and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown.
Then after holding the Rams on four downs, the MSU offense scored on it's third play from scrimmage when Rahsaan Bell called his own number on a quarterback draw, taking it 40 yards in for a touchdown.
ASU answered with a touchdown on it's next possession by Kyle Fox on a 41-yard run to make it 14-7 with 10:52 remaining in the first quarter.
That would be the last score until late in the third quarter.
Following an ASU fumble, MSU redshirt freshman Ryan Roberts came in for a banged up Bell and connected with Darrius Richard on a 69-yard pass. The point-after failed as MSU went up 20-7.
Then the Indians took the ball again on a Lance Gardner interception. MSU had a touchdown nullified by a penalty, and settled for a Kristian Foster 26-yard field goal to post a 23-7 lead with 11:31 to play.
That's when ASU's potent offense woke up.
Weishuhn hit Fox for a 35-yard touchdown with 10:22 to play, but was unsuccessful on the two-point conversion.
When MSU punted on the next possession, the Indians were penalized for fair catch interference that moved the ball from the ASU 13 to the 28. Weishuhn directed the Rams for another touchdown, capping it with a pass to Lamar Hickey from 15-yards out.
MSU thought it sealed the game on the next possession when Ross Harrison broke three tackles on a 69-yard touchdown run, but once again the point after was missed, giving the Indians a nine-point advantage.
But the Rams wouldn't die. Weishuhn got the Rams back into the endzone with a 32-yard pass to Justin Carter with 1:22 to go, pulling back to 29-27.
ASU recovered the onside kick and Weishuhn got the Rams down to the Indian six with nine seconds to play. MSU blocked the field goal attempt, but an outside rusher was ruled offside and that's when Williams put his next attempt just inside the left upright for the win.
When the fourth quarter was over, the teams had combined for more than 400 yards and 32 points.
Midwestern returns home to Memorial Stadium next Saturday to face unbeaten West Texas A&M, who upset third-ranked Texas A&M-Kingsville 28-20 on Saturday.
