Dr. Gore receives faculty's highest honor

Dr. Mildred (Millie) C. Gore, associate professor of counseling and special education at Midwestern State University, was named Hardin Professor for 2005 during the MSU commencement Saturday morning.  Hardin Professor is the highest honor bestowed upon a faculty member at the university each year.

The Hardin Foundation for Wichita County established the annual award in 1962 for a member of the MSU faculty whose teaching and research of the preceding 12 months has brought distinction to the faculty member and the institution.  The award carries with it a stipend of $3,500.

Gore received her Bachelor of Science in Education from Eastern New Mexico University where she also received her Master of Special Education. She received her Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Arkansas

She began her career at MSU in 1993 as an assistant professor of education. In 1998 she was promoted to associate professor education and currently serves at coordinator of special education. She has published four books, including her most recent, "Successful inclusion strategies for secondary and middle school teachers: Helping struggling readers access the curriculum." Gore is currently working on a book designed to assist attorneys in representing clients with learning disabilities, mental retardation, or traumatic brain injury.

She currently serves as a member of many organizations and boards including the Higher Education Collaborative, Texas Higher Education Consortium in Special Education where she was a founding member, American Association for Mental Retardation, the Arc of Wichita County and the Council for Exceptional Children. She served as the State Vice President of Membership 2002-2004 for the Texas Association of College Teachers.

She is dedicated to her profession, to her community and to her university. In 2000 she led her multicultural education classes in raising $24,000 for playground equipment for Fannin Elementary School. The next year the classes raised $2,500 to purchase choir robes for the Fannin Spirit Choir.
