Dr. Samuel Watson was named the new dean of the College of Liberal Arts
Dr. Samuel Watson was named the new dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Midwestern State University on Thursday, April 8. He succeeds Dr. Michael Collins who has resigned the position in order to focus more on writing and teaching. Watson currently serves as chair and professor of political science. He came to MSU as an assistant professor in 1992. He was promoted to associate professor in 1997 and received full tenure the same year. Watson became chair of the political science department in 1999, was promoted to full professor in 2002 and has served as the associate dean since the fall of 2003.
"Dr. Watson was chosen from a pool of very fine and well qualified candidates from around the United States because we know him as a fine teacher, a consistent researcher, and a proven department chair," said Dr. Friederike Wiedemann, provost. "The support in the College of Liberal Arts is truly phenomenal, especially when one considers that peers would like to see him as their leader. Other deans and I are looking forward to working closely with him. While it will not be easy for him to step into his predecessor's shoes given Dr. Collins' excellent and dedicated service, I have no doubt that he will aptly pick up the reins and continue to direct the college in its pursuit of ever increasing excellence.
On a personal note, I know that I am going to enjoy his forthrightness and his humor." Watson teaches political science classes ranging from basic American government to graduate courses. He holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Georgia, a master of arts in law and diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and a bachelor of arts in political science from the University of Georgia.
