Midwestern State University announced today that it had received a $1 million gift from James McCoy which is dedicated to the university's new mechanical engineering program. The McCoy Foundation, a charitable foundation established by McCoy in 1995, previously contributed approximately $150,000 to assist in the establishment of this program which began this fall after the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board gave its approval in May. The MSU Board of Regents voted on Friday to name the new program the McCoy School of Mechanical Engineering. James McCoy graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering and from Penn State University with an M.S. in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. He worked in the petroleum industry prior to organizing Echometer Company in 1962. McCoy and Echometer Company have developed a computerized Well Analyzer System used to measure and improve the efficiency of producing oil wells. Echometer Company is a major supplier of these Well Analyzer Systems and other well performance instruments throughout the world. McCoy is active in the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and was the recipient of the 1994 J.C. Slonneger Award from the Southwestern Petroleum Short Course in Lubbock, Texas for outstanding contributions to the field of petroleum engineering. He was recently awarded the Export Achievement Certificate from the U.S. Department of Commerce/U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service for accomplishments in the global marketplace. Since its inception, the McCoy Foundation has supported local organizations including United Regional Healthcare Center, North Texas Rehabilitation Center, Camp Fire USA North Texas Council, Crime Stoppers, the Texas Alliance for Minorities in Engineering and Wichita Falls I.S.D. The Foundation also provides college scholarships for local high school graduates and lends support to caring for the deaf, providing water wells in Mexico, and ministering to orphans throughout the world. McCoy is an avid tennis player. He and his wife, Vicky, reside in Wichita Falls. The MSU Board of Regents voted on Friday to name the new program the McCoy School of Mechanical Engineering.
