Midwestern State University has received $720,000 as a result of the last will and te

The funds will be divided equally with $360,000 to be added to the D.L. Ligon Basketball Scholarship Endowment and $360,000 to be used for the creation of the D.L. and Gertrude Ligon Educational Scholarship Fund. The basketball scholarship endowment was established in 1976 to provide student scholarships. Dr. Ligon, better known as "Doc," served as a coach from 1938 until 1946. In 1975, primarily as a result of the persistence of many of his former students, MSU's 5,200-seat coliseum was named in his honor. The newly-created educational scholarship fund will be used for scholarships for future teachers majoring in education. Dr. Ligon came to Midwestern in 1937 as a Spanish teacher. Through the years he held many different administrative positions and often commented that he had filled every position on campus except Dean of Women. However, in 1985, the Texas House adopted a resolution officially making him Dean of Women for a day. In 1965, the student body bestowed the title of "Mr. Midwestern" on him. After returning to teaching, he officially retired in 1970 only to take on the responsibilities of sports information director. After more than 50 years of service to the university, the Board of Regents conferred upon him the title of Sports Information Director Emeritus. Dr. Ligon died in 1990 and his wife, Gertrude, died in 2001. As a result of these bequests, their love for Midwestern State University will continue to benefit students in the future. 7/28/03
