A documentary produced by students in the Midwestern State University Mass Communication Department won Best of Show in the annual Broadcast Education Association On-Location competition in November 2023.

The program “In Their Shoes,” produced by MSU Texas students Maleah Lifland, Keza Muvunyi, and Miranda Salinas, was cited in the Documentary category.

In addition, “How We Heal,” produced by MSU Texas students Randi Heaton, Alexis Martin, Jeromy Stacy, and Gasmyne Cox, won an Award of Excellence in the Documentary category.

BEA is an international organization of educators and media professionals. It sponsors three annual competitions for students and faculty as well as conferences and other resources. This year’s competition drew about 1,400 entries in 11 categories from all over the United States and the world.

Jim Sernoe, chair of the MSU Texas Mass Communication Department, said, “These student-produced documentaries were both excellent and told important stories in our community. Our students continue to produce work that can compete with any university in the country, even those that are literally 10 times our size.”
