MSU Texas Flower Mound to host grand opening for new center

Midwestern State University will celebrate the grand opening of its much-anticipated new student learning center in the Dallas-Fort Worth area from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, at 100 Parker Square, Flower Mound, Texas. Administrators from both MSU Texas and North Central Texas College broke ground on the shared facility in December 2016.

NCTC Chancellor G. Brent Wallace and MSU Texas President Suzanne Shipley will address guests at the opening along with special guests Lori Walker, President of the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce, and Michael Flusche, North Texas Deputy Regional Director for Senator Ted Cruz.

Visitors will be able to tour the 31,000-square-foot facility, which houses classrooms, two science laboratories, a combination laboratory and lecture classroom, three interactive television classrooms, and two seminar classrooms.

Randy Canivel, Director of the MSU Texas Flower Mound facility, said that the shared facility also has a state-of-the-art webinar room, freeform study/lounging area, tutoring and testing space, administrative and faculty offices, a bookstore with a coffee bar and grab-and-go food items, and a conference room that will be available for community use.

"We are excited and ready to open the doors," Canivel said. "This is a momentous occasion for MSU Texas."

The partnership established between the two schools allows NCTC students to finish their associate degrees, and then seamlessly continue their education at MSU Texas to pursue select baccalaureate degrees on the same campus - a unique opportunity for students who otherwise might not have the opportunity to pursue a four-year degree.

NCTC opened its facility in Parker Square in 2011, and MSU Texas Flower Mound began operations in fall 2017 using NCTC's Parker Square facility. MSU Texas Flower Mound offers degree completion programs in teacher education, respiratory care, radiology and nursing, along with its online adult completion degree with emphasis in criminal justice, human services and business. Beginning this fall, MSU Texas will expand its offerings to including an MBA with an energy management concentration.

Flower Mound's Parker Square is an area of businesses, restaurants, medical offices, education centers, and personal services. Canivel said the Flower Mound Chamber of Commerce has designated June 6 as "MSU Texas Day," and employees of the Market Street United grocery store in Flower Mound will be wearing MSU Texas Flower Mound shirts.

The MSU Texas Alumni Association will host a reception for MSU Texas alumni from 5-7 p.m. that day. RSVP to alumrel@msutexas.edu or call 940-397-4121 by Friday, June 1.
