Mustangs add Johnson to football coaching staff

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - Midwestern State coach Bill Maskill announced the addition of Allen Johnson to the Mustangs' coaching staff Thursday morning.

Johnson will serve as an assistant coach and will be in charge of the secondary after serving a season as the quality control and a defensive backs coach at Oklahoma State.

"Allan brings great energy and enthusiasm to our program," Maskill said. "He has a wealth of experience first as a standout player then as a coach on the defensive side of the ball."

Johnson worked a different route during his collegiate career.

After playing a season at Central Oklahoma, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for a 3 1/2-year stint before returning to the gridiron at Texas A&M-Commerce.

While with the Lions, Johnson earned the honor of playing in the 1998 Snow Bowl, which was the NCAA Division II all-star game before starting his coaching career as a graduate assistant in Commerce.

After coaching three years at the high school level at Carrollton's (Texas) Newman-Smith and Tampa's (Fla.) Gaither high schools, Johnson helped Blinn (Texas) College Top 10 national finish as the recruiting coordinator at secondary coach.

Midwestern State, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs last season, kicks off the 2007 campaign at Adams State in Alamosa, Colo. on Aug. 25.
