Mustangs Fall to Hilltoppers

SAN ANGELO, Texas - - The Midwestern State softball team lost its first game in the 2007 NCAA South Central Regional, falling to St. Edward's University, 2-0.

St. Edward's (43-16) broke open the scoreless game in the bottom of the third on a RBI triple by Jennifer Hollas. The Hilltoppers then scored their second run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sacrifice bunt by Hollas, which made the score 2-0. MSU (44-15) threaten in the top of the seventh inning when they had runners on first and second and one out, but SEU pitcher Courtney Francis got Midwestern to ground out two straight times to end the game and give her the four hit shut out.

The Mustangs received a solid day at the plate from Kristen Stonecipher (1-2,), Lauren Craig (1-1) and Tara Staten (1-2).

MSU also received a great game off the mound from Katie Petersen. Petersen, despite the loss, allowed only four hits and two runs, one earned, and struck out eight. Her record falls to 25-12 on the season.

Midwestern will now face the two seed and host school Angelo State, who knocked out Western New Mexico 10-0 in five innings. The MSU-ASU game will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday from the ASU Softball Complex and will be an elimination game, with the loser going home, and the winner playing at 6:30 p.m.
