Offense dominates in Maroon-Gold Scrimmage
WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The day belonged to the offense as it totally dominated the defense in the 2007 Midwestern State University Maroon-Gold Spring Football Game Saturday afternoon at the MSU South Practice Field.
The Gold team, the offense, defeated the Maroon team, the defense, 52-36 in a game that featured a points scoring system rather than traditional scoring.
The offense collected three touchdowns on the day in the 77-play controlled scrimmage. The offense tallied 317 total yards without committing a turnover.
Returning All-Lone Star Conference South second-team quarterback Daniel Polk directed MSU to one touchdown, hitting 11-of-16 passes for 113 yards with a two-yard TD pass to Brison Porter.
Second team signal caller Justin Lightfoot threw for 131 yards, completing 9-of-14 passes with touchdown tosses of 19 yards to Robert Wells and 17 yards to Andy Tanner.
The defense, led by linebacker Cody Thompson, stopped the offense collected one "three-and-out" stop, but did hold the offensive unit inside the redzone twice.
The Maroon-Gold scrimmage is the recognized culmination of spring practice for MSU, but due to the weather the Mustangs will have a few more practices before putting away the pads for the summer.
MSU's home opener is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 8 when the Mustangs host Southwestern Oklahoma State at Memorial Stadium in a 7 p.m. contest.
