Campus response to Virginia Tech incident

A Message from President Jesse W. Rogers

It is with great sadness that we learned of the April 16 tragic shootings that occurred on the Virginia Tech campus. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the victims and their families and to the members of the Virginia Tech student body, faculty, and administration. Our prayers are with them as they work to deal with this tragedy.

We are mindful of concerns on our own campus. I want to assure you that Midwestern State consciously seeks to create a safe campus environment. We have specific procedures in place to deal with possible campus emergencies and we constantly work to ensure the safety of our students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors. Specifically, our safety measures include

• university police dispatchers and campus police are on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week;
• emergency phones are available throughout the campus that connect directly to the university police dispatcher;
• our residence halls are equipped with the most modern surveillance cameras in hallways, stairwells, and parking lots; and
• a locking system is installed on the entrance doors to all residence halls allowing entrance only to those with an appropriate card.

I know there may be members of our campus community who are deeply touched by this week's events. Individuals who would like to talk with someone about the incident may wish to contact our Counseling Center at 940-397-4618.

These shocking and tragic events at Virginia Tech remind us that no individual or community is immune from random acts of violence. However, we want you to feel secure in the knowledge that we continue to do our best to provide a safe environment at MSU.
