Mustangs women fall at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The Angelo State University Rambelles grabbed an early lead and never looked back as they defeated the Midwestern State University Mustangs 72-31 in Lone Star Conference South action Saturday night.

MSU (11-11, 4-6) saw its two-game win streak snapped with the loss, while ASU (13-9, 5-5) broke a two-game losing skid.

The victory sent MSU from a four-way tie for third place in the LSC South, while ASU remained in a third place tie with the win.

The 31 points by Midwestern is the fewest points ever for the women, since records were kept beginning in 1975-76.The previous low was 35 in a 71-35 loss to West Texas A&M in the 1987-88 season.

MSU kept the game close early, pulling within four at 16-12 when 8:58 to play on a three-pointer by Sonya Calhoun-Courtney, but that would be the last score for MSU until a layup by Halie Jacobs with eight seconds left in the half.The 'Belles rolled up a 21-2 run going into halftime over the last nine minutes for a 37-14 halftime advantage.

The second half wasn't much better for MSU either as ASU seemed to do no wrong.

The plus for the Mustangs was the extended playing time for the freshmen who have seen little playing time for MSU.

The Mustangs were paced by Calhoun-Courtney who was the only MSU player in double figures scoring with 10 points, while Andrea Buben collected six points before leaving the game with an injury.Kaylon Hodge grabbed seven rebounds for MSU.

ASU was led by Tiffany Hardwell who picked up 14 points, while Ashley King and Lindsey Leatherman each collected 11 points.Michele Mitchell pulled downs 10 rebounds for ASU.

Midwestern  State shot just 20.4 percent (11-of-54) from the floor, while ASU hit 46.8 percent (29-of-62).ASU outrebounded MSU 48-33.

The MSU women are in action on the road again Wednesday night in Denton against Texas Woman's University.Tipoff time is set for 7 p.m. at Kitty Magee Arena.
