Mustangs Win Three

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - - Fresh off their 2006 Lone Star Conference Championship, the Midwestern State Softball Team opened the 2007 season at the St Mary's Classic in San Antonio, winning three of five games.

 

In game one, the Mustangs faced LSC rival Abilene Christian, with the Wildcats coming away with the 2-1 victory. Midwestern scored on a RBI Double by first basemen Jessica Rodriguez, who knocked in shortstop Maranda Bishop. MSU pitcher Katie Petersen picked up the loss, despite striking out eight ACU Batters.

 

In the second game, MSU received a big game from All-American third basemen Kristen Stonecipher in the 8-4 win over Southern Arkansas</place />. Stonecipher had two home runs and double, going 4-4 with six RBI's. Pitcher Ashley Kuchenski picked up the win, striking out five, and only allowing one earned run.

 

The Mustangs pounded Incarnate Word 11-3 in five innings, in game three. MSU had big games from centerfielder Cheyanne Paschal, 4-4 and one RBI, and again from Stonecipher, 2-3 2 RBI's. Pitcher Katie Peterson picked up her first win of the young season, and struck out three batters.

 

Midwestern continued the hot bats in game four, as they come back from down 5-2, to beat Texas Women's 15-6 in five innings. MSU was again led by Paschal (2-3, one RBI) and Stonecipher (2-3, six RBI's, one home run). Pitcher Katie Petersen came in from the bull pen to strike out 3, and allow one run in two and two-thirds innings.

 

MSU lost to host school St. Mary's in their fifth and final game of the tournament, 9-1. Stonecipher had the Mustangs only hit, going 1-2 with one RBI. Pitcher Katie Petersen (2-2) picked up the loss, but struck out five batters in four and one third innings.

 

Midwestern placed center fielder Cheyanne Paschal and third basemen Kristen Stonecipher on the all-tournament team. Paschal batted .471 with two RBI's, while Stonecipher batted .600 with three home runs, one double, and 15 RBI's.

 

The Mustangs return to action this weekend, as they travel to Denton to play in the Texas Women's Tournament.
