Mustangs Win Three in Kingsville

 

KINGSVILLE, Texas - - The Midwestern State Softball team won three of four games this past weekend in the Javelina Classic, hosted by Texas A&M-Kingsville. The two day round robin tournament featured MSU, Kingsville, and St. Edward's University.

 

The Mustangs (13-5) split games on Saturday, beating SEU in 10 innings, 2-1, and then falling to TAMUK, 3-2, in eight innings. Midwestern then won both games on Sunday, beating Kingsville 4-3, and then beating St. Edwards, 2-1.

 

Playing well at the plate for the Mustangs this weekend were third baseman Kristen Stonecipher (.462 batting average with six hits and one double), shortstop Kelli Shaw (.400 batting average with four hits, one double, and two runs batted in), and first baseman Amanda Hill (.357 batting average with five hits, one double, and two RBI's).

 

MSU also received great games on the mound from Katie Petersen and Ashley Kuchenski. Petersen finished the tournament 1-1 with a 0.98 earned run average and struck out 16 batters in 14 1/3 innings. Petersen finished the tournament 2-0 with a 1.71 ERA and struck out 14 batters in 16 1/3 innings of work.

 

The Mustangs will be in action again on Wednesday, as they travel to Edmond, Oklahoma> to take on Central Oklahoma in a double header. Game time for the first game is set for 1:00 p.m.
