Mustang Women fall at West Texas

CANYON, Texas - The Midwestern State University Mustangs gave the West Texas A&M University Lady Buffs all they wanted, but it wasn't enough to hold back the seventh-ranked team in NCAA Division II women's basketball as WT posted a 73-55 victory Saturday night in Lone Stare Conference South action.

finished the season with a 12-14 record, 5-9 to close the season fifth in the LSC South. WT improves to 24-3 overall and finished as the LSC South Division champions with a perfect 14-0 record.

West Texas A&M started the game with an 11-0 run, before MSU got on the board with a Stacey Staten jumper with 14:43 to play.

WT built a 15-4 advantage when MSU provided an answer. Kaylon Hodge started an 18-7 for the Mustangs with a layup with 12:14 to go.

Hodge and Sonya Calhoun-Courtney combined over the next six minutes to get the game tied with 6:40 to play when Calhoun-Courtney hit a jumper knotting the game at 22.

But that was MSU's last run, as the Lady Buffs came back with a 12-2 run and never looked back.

The Lady Buffs led by 14, 43-29 at the half.

WT pulled away in the second half, getting a 28-point lead at 68-40, before the Mustangs put together an eight-point run to keep the game near the 20-point range.

The Mustangs were paced by Hodge with 17 points and three assists. Senior Courtney-Calhoun collected 16 points with five rebounds, hitting a jumper with a minute left to make it an 18-point contest. Staten also had 16 points and five boards for the Mustangs.

WT got a double-double from Courtney Lee with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while All-American Emily Brister collected 14 points for the Lady Buffs.

WT shot 45.8 percent from the floor (27-of-59), while MSU hit 32.1 percent from the field (18-of-56). Both teams hit three three-pointers and 16 free throws.

WT outrebounded MSU 54-23.
