MSU Softball wins Mustangs Invitational

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The Midwestern State University softball team did what it was supposed to do when it hosted its first-ever tournament, claiming the championship with a 9-0 victory over Northeastern State University Saturday evening.

MSU (10-4), who lost every coin flip to play each game of the tournament as the visiting team, held tenuous 1-0 lead entering the top of the seventh against NSU ace India Williamson.

But the Mustangs, who had threatened several times but only plated one run, finally got to the Lady Reds star.

MSU launched an eight run attack in the inning, on three hits and three costly NSU errors to break the game open.

Lefty Ashley Kuchenski rolled her record to 4-0 with the win for MSU, going the distance with a six-hit shutout, striking out seven and allowing two walks.

Lindsey Voigt was the hitting star of the championship, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, to go with Kristen Stonecipher's 2-for-4 with two RBI in the game.

MSU advance to the championship by beating St. Mary's 2-1 in eight innings.

The Mustangs got the win in the top of the eight as Kuchenski, as a pinch runner, was placed at 2nd on the international tie breaker. She was bunted to third and scored on Voigt's RBI sacrifice. Voigt reached base on an error.

MSU got a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Stonecipher, who singled to lead off the inning, scored on a wild pitch.

But in bottom of the seventh with two out, STMU's Ashley Flores smashed a hot liner down the left field line that turned into an inside-the-park homer to tie the game.

MSU freshman Katie Petersen (6-4) got the win, going all eight innings. Petersen struck out nine, walked one while scattering four hits.

MSU's Cheyanne Paschal went 2-for-4 in the game, while Stonecipher was 2-for-3. Voigt had the game's lone RBI.
