Javelinas stop MSU Women 64-47

KINGSVILLE
,
Texas
- The Midwestern State University Mustangs shooting was as cold as the weather, as MSU shot just 32.8 percent from the floor in a 64-47 loss to Texas A&M University-Kingsville in Lone Star Conference South play Saturday night.

MSU (8-8, 1-3) went scoreless for six minutes in the first half, while TAMUK (6-10, 1-2) went on an 8-0 run to build a lead it would never relinquish. The win was the first in LSC South play this season for the Javelinas.

The Mustangs trailed 36-22 at the half, but battled back. Trailing by 15, the Mustangs went on an 8-0 run to pull within seven at 50-43 with 7:59 to go on a fastbreak layup by Stacey Staten.

But after a timeout, the Javelinas got only their second three-pointer of the game as Kayla Naylor buried the trifecta and ended the Mustangs run.

MSU was led by the play of senior Sonya Calhoun-Courtney who scored 16 points, while Staten added 10 points off the bench. Andi Richardson led MSU with nine rebounds with two blocked shots.

A&M-Kingsville got a pair of double-doubles on the evening. Lana Toki led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds, with Angela Trotter chipping in 10 points and 10 boards.

TAMUK hit 51 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Mustangs 43-30.

The Mustangs were without head coach Shannon Burks, who did not make the trip due to a family emergency.

MSU returns to the court on Thursday when they host

Eastern New Mexico
in the first game of a men's/women's doubleheader. The game will tipoff at 6 p.m. at
Gerald Stockton Court
in D.L. Ligon Coliseum.
